Globalization has been a defining feature of the modern world economy, yet its trajectory has been far from linear. Periods of deep international integration have alternated with episodes of fragmentation, protectionism, and geopolitical realignment. From the late 19th-century globalization wave to the interwar collapse, from the post-1945 liberal order to contemporary trade tensions, financial decoupling, and supply chain restructuring, the macroeconomic consequences of globalization and de-globalization remain central to understanding long-run economic development.
This conference aims to bring together scholars in economic history, macroeconomics, political economy, and related fields to examine the macroeconomic dynamics of globalization and de-globalization across historical periods. We welcome contributions employing quantitative, qualitative, and archival approaches.
Possible Topics (including but not limited to):
- Long-run trends in trade, capital flows, migration, and financial integration
- Macroeconomic volatility under different globalization regimes
- Monetary and fiscal policy in open economies (e.g., under the gold standard, Bretton Woods, or flexible exchange rates)
- Globalization and inequality: distributional and political economy dimensions
- Sovereign debt, financial crises, and international contagion
- Supply chains, industrial policy, and structural change
- Wars, sanctions, and geopolitical fragmentation
- The role of international institutions in stabilizing or reversing globalization
- Comparative studies of integration and disintegration episodes
Both country-specific studies and comparative or global analyses are encouraged.
We are delighted to announce that Professor Kevin O’Rourke (Science Po, Paris) has agreed to deliver the keynote lecture.
